As a theatre practitioner, playwright, director, actor and comedianne Genevieve creates works that focus on dysfunctional neuroses and behaviours that we all fall prey to in modern society. They balance the horror and the hilarity, the awkwardness and the beauty of the human condition – as funny as they are unsettling.

BIOGRAPHY

With over four years’ experience independently producing physical theatre in Brisbane, Genevieve’s performance style and aesthetic has steadily gained recognition. Known for being a strong character actor and for presenting works that attract linguistically diverse audiences, she creates works that focus on dysfunctional neuroses and behaviours that we all fall prey to in modern society.

Genevieve has taken on many roles during her ten-year arts career including theatre practitioner, director, dramaturge, actor and comedienne. In recent years she has created and presented works for festivals including Wonderland Festival at Brisbane Powerhouse, Adelaide Fringe Festival, This is Not Art (TiNA) in Newcastle, Townsville Cultural Festival, Anywhere Theatre Festival and La Boite’s Festival of Australian Student Theatre (FAST).

In 2009 Genevieve graduated from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama). While training at QUT she was introduced to a style of theatre that spoke to her aesthetics which was under developed in Brisbane. This led her to travel to Belgium to train for two years at the International school of theatre LASSAAD, following the pedagogue of Lecoq.

On returning to Brisbane in 2014, Genevieve’s first solo work Darling, it’s just soap, a bouffon inspired piece was accepted into La Boite’s FAST program. She returned in 2015 to FAST with Penelopa, a full-length Expressive Half-Mask solo performance.

Following her success with her first two solo works, Genevieve created A Rose among Horns, a Commedia dell’Arte inspired work which premiered at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Wonderland Festival 2017 and Crack Theatre Festival (TiNA), Newcastle 2017, with previous incarnations appearing around Australia in 2015/16 titled The Cindy Twitch. She also received a Setting the Stages Grant (Australia Council) to create Éden, a short satirical work performed entirely in French, which debuted at Crack Theatre Festival in 2016.

Genevieve works as a theatre and dance facilitator for Access Arts  (QLD) and is regularly found performing and emceeing at Woodford Folk Festival. She has worked with Queensland Ballet as a storyteller for The Nutcracker (2017), Sprung integrated dance theatre (2016), Polyglot Theatre Ants (2015), Motherboard Productions Iphegina 2.0, William Kentridge’s Lulu (2014 creative development), Sortilege theatre festival, Belgium; both Media and Antigone, as well as the roving in The Bouffon Parade (2014).
